The landscape is dominated by the fjord, rivers and impressive mountains with the highest top on 1.149 m over sea level. Except the midnight sun and the magnificent landscape, we were surprised by the large amount of rock carvings that are around 6400 years old and listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage. Amazing that people were living here so long time ago; people of the late stone age and early metal age. They saw many cultural changes, including the adoption of metal tools and changes in areas such as boat building and fishing techniques. The carvings show a wide variety of imagery and religious symbolism. There are some main motifs that are found through all the periods, like the reindeer, elk, bear, dogs\/wolf, fox hare, geese, ducks, swans, fiches and vales. Often there are large images showing people and animals participating in various activities like hunting, collecting, fishing, dancing and rituals.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"jig4\" Deep snow, below -20 degrees Centigrade and strong cold winds. The landscape looks very different compared to when we saw it last time. The sun is never raising above the horizon. Only some read glow in South. Alta calls itself the \u201cNordic Light City\u201d and several companies are marketing guarantied Nord Light experiences. We are taking the tour \u201cThe hunt for Nordic Light\u201d by GL\u00d8D and they pick us up at our hotel already the fist evening. In there cosy facilities we are served hot soup when they tell us about Nordic Light and how to best photograph the dancing green curtains. The other participants in the group are from South Afrika and France. Auroras display dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that appear as curtains, rays, spirals, or dynamic flickers covering the entire sky. Auroras are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind occurring within bands around both polar regions. In the Northern hemisphere it is called <em><strong>aurora borealis<\/strong><\/em> or <em><strong>Nordic light<\/strong><\/em>. Getting a view of an aurora, requires magnetic activities in the atmosphere, clear sky and minimum of interfering light from urban areas. We can hardly imagine the aurora\u2019s faint glow. Our guide is very optimistic and tells us that the green curtains will appear clearly on the final photos. Based on the last night\u2019s experience with navigation in the dark harsh landscape covered with snow, we decide not to rent a car. Instead we are exploring the town on feet. One of the best memories from Alta is the \u201cNorthern Lights Cathedral\u201d, bult after our first visit to Alta. The town has dramatic history and it is hard to understand that it was totally burnt down during the second world war. We take the opportunity to eat &#8220;t\u00f8rrfisk\u201d (stockfish) and huge shrimps, typical dishes in the area. We understand that we had extraordinary luck with the weather our first evening as it was cloudy since then. Snowstorm is expected when leaving Alta the fourth day. The landscape is dominated by the fjord, rivers and impressive mountains with the highest top on 1.149 m over sea level. Except the midnight sun and the magnificent landscape, we were surprised by the large amount of rock carvings that are around 6400 years old and listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage. Amazing that people were living here so long time ago; people of the late stone age and early metal age. They saw many cultural changes, including the adoption of metal tools and changes in areas such as boat building and fishing techniques. The carvings show a wide variety of imagery and religious symbolism. There are some main motifs that are found through all the periods, like the reindeer, elk, bear, dogs\/wolf, fox hare, geese, ducks, swans, fiches and vales. Deep snow, below -20 degrees Centigrade and strong cold winds. The landscape looks very different compared to when we saw it last time. The sun is never raising above the horizon. Only some read glow in South. Alta calls itself the \u201cNordic Light City\u201d and several companies are marketing guarantied Nord Light experiences. We are taking the tour \u201cThe hunt for Nordic Light\u201d by GL\u00d8D and they pick us up at our hotel already the fist evening. In there cosy facilities we are served hot soup when they tell us about Nordic Light and how to best photograph the dancing green curtains. The other participants in the group are from South Afrika and France. Auroras display dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that appear as curtains, rays, spirals, or dynamic flickers covering the entire sky. Auroras are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind occurring within bands around both polar regions. In the Northern hemisphere it is called <em><strong>aurora borealis<\/strong><\/em> or <em><strong>Nordic light<\/strong><\/em>. Getting a view of an aurora, requires magnetic activities in the atmosphere, clear sky and minimum of interfering light from urban areas. We can hardly imagine the aurora\u2019s faint glow. Our guide is very optimistic and tells us that the green curtains will appear clearly on the final photos. Based on the last night\u2019s experience with navigation in the dark harsh landscape covered with snow, we decide not to rent a car. Instead we are exploring the town on feet. One of the best memories from Alta is the \u201cNorthern Lights Cathedral\u201d, bult after our first visit to Alta. The town has dramatic history and it is hard to understand that it was totally burnt down during the second world war. We take the opportunity to eat \"t\u00f8rrfisk\u201d (stockfish) and huge shrimps, typical dishes in the area. We understand that we had extraordinary luck with the weather our first evening as it was cloudy since then. Snowstorm is expected when leaving Alta the fourth day. Fantastiskt att ett j\u00e4gar-samlarfolk levde s\u00e5 h\u00e4r l\u00e5ngt norrut f\u00f6r s\u00e5 l\u00e4nge sedan. H\u00e4llristningarna visar troligen en del av m\u00e4nniskornas trosf\u00f6rest\u00e4llningar och ritualer och var kanske delar av myter eller historier. De ber\u00e4ttar ocks\u00e5 om de naturliga omgivningarna och naturresurserna, genom det djurliv som \u00e4r avbildat: ren, \u00e4lg, bj\u00f6rn, hund\/varg, r\u00e4v, hare, g\u00e4ss, \u00e4nder, svanar, h\u00e4lleflundra, lax och val. Endast m\u00f6rker st\u00f6rre delen av dygnet och lite rodnande skymning mitt p\u00e5 dagen. Alta kallar sig sj\u00e4lv f\u00f6r \"Norrskensstaden\" och det finns flera arrang\u00f6rer som erbjuder \"garanterade\" upplevelser av norrsken f\u00f6r bes\u00f6kare. Vi fastnar f\u00f6r turen \"Jakten p\u00e5 nordlyset\" arrangerad av GL\u00d8D och vi blir h\u00e4mtade p\u00e5 hotellet redan f\u00f6rsta kv\u00e4llen. I deras mysiga lokal serveras vi varm soppa och blir informerad om Norrsken och hur man kan f\u00e5nga de dansande gr\u00f6na sl\u00f6jorna med kameran. \u00d6vriga deltagare \u00e4r fr\u00e5n sommarvarmt Sydafrika och Frankrike. Alta har en sp\u00e4nnande historia och det \u00e4r sv\u00e5rt att f\u00f6rst\u00e5 att hela staden br\u00e4ndes ner under andra v\u00e4rldskriget. Vi passar ocks\u00e5 p\u00e5 att \u00e4ta \"t\u00f8rrfisk\" och njuta av de fantastiska och stora r\u00e4korna. Vi f\u00f6rst\u00e5r att vi hade en sagolik tur med v\u00e4dret f\u00f6rsta kv\u00e4llen eftersom det var mulet de efterf\u00f6ljande dagarna. The landscape is dominated by the fjord, rivers and impressive mountains with the highest top on 1.149 m over sea level. Except the midnight sun and the magnificent landscape, we were surprised by the large amount of rock carvings that are around 6400 years old and listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage. Amazing that people were living here so long time ago; people of the late stone age and early metal age. They saw many cultural changes, including the adoption of metal tools and changes in areas such as boat building and fishing techniques. The carvings show a wide variety of imagery and religious symbolism. There are some main motifs that are found through all the periods, like the reindeer, elk, bear, dogs\/wolf, fox hare, geese, ducks, swans, fiches and vales. Deep snow, below -20 degrees Centigrade and strong cold winds. The landscape looks very different compared to when we saw it last time. The sun is never raising above the horizon. Only some read glow in South. Alta calls itself the \u201cNordic Light City\u201d and several companies are marketing guarantied Nord Light experiences. We are taking the tour \u201cThe hunt for Nordic Light\u201d by GL\u00d8D and they pick us up at our hotel already the fist evening. In there cosy facilities we are served hot soup when they tell us about Nordic Light and how to best photograph the dancing green curtains. The other participants in the group are from South Afrika and France. Auroras display dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that appear as curtains, rays, spirals, or dynamic flickers covering the entire sky. Auroras are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind occurring within bands around both polar regions. In the Northern hemisphere it is called <em><strong>aurora borealis<\/strong><\/em> or <em><strong>Nordic light<\/strong><\/em>. Getting a view of an aurora, requires magnetic activities in the atmosphere, clear sky and minimum of interfering light from urban areas. We can hardly imagine the aurora\u2019s faint glow. Our guide is very optimistic and tells us that the green curtains will appear clearly on the final photos. Based on the last night\u2019s experience with navigation in the dark harsh landscape covered with snow, we decide not to rent a car. Instead we are exploring the town on feet. One of the best memories from Alta is the \u201cNorthern Lights Cathedral\u201d, bult after our first visit to Alta. The town has dramatic history and it is hard to understand that it was totally burnt down during the second world war. We take the opportunity to eat \"t\u00f8rrfisk\u201d (stockfish) and huge shrimps, typical dishes in the area. We understand that we had extraordinary luck with the weather our first evening as it was cloudy since then. Snowstorm is expected when leaving Alta the fourth day.
