According to statistics, it was the worst storm since 1904. Before the storm, winds from west had pressed a lot of water into the Baltic Sea. When the wind suddenly turned to east and the storm Babet approached, it pushed the water towards the coasts of Scania, Denmark and Germany causing water levels to rise dramatically (1.5-2 m above the normal levels). The coasts in Scania were exposed to devastating eroding forces. Several meters of the overgrown beaches in Friseboda Nature Reserve were taken by the waves and enormous amount of sand moved into the sea. Washed ashore garbage, piles of roots, fallen trees and damaged boats are left on the beaches. Some of the boats that always have been laying on the beaches are gone and some \u201cnew\u201d are found. More open, austere and barren than before. Old arrangements created for visitor\u2019s convenience must be rebuilt. Benches and tables are washed away. Walking paths close to the beach are gone. Vegetation that gave protection against the wind and created \u201crooms\u201d in the landscape are gone. It is a great loss and it will take time to get used to the new environment. But it is just to accept that this type of drastic changes is an important part of renewal of nature.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"jig6\" class=\"justified-image-grid jig-e8030f31b2568cf414c5df0863c0024d The water and waves undermined the trees that helpless fell over the walking path. Again, direction is from east. The waves are big and rolls loudly and powerful up on the beach. A lot of the garbage is brought back into the sea and hopefully some of the lost sand will be returned. We are used to the ever-changing conditions on the beach when the wind and the waves move the sand around. wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading8510_d69a8b-56\">A couple of days later, we got the ominous news that the passenger ship Marco Polo had run aground in Pukavik in Han\u00f6 Bay outside the cost of Blekinge. A broken GPS navigator is claimed to be the cause. Unbelievable that commercial shipping is allowed to operate with only one navigation system. A week after the accident, the ship is still aground. The damages are extensive after in total three groundings. The ship is carrying 300.000 liter of heavy fuel oil. Estimations indicates that half of it leaked into the sea and some have already hit the coast of Blekinge. A catastrophe for the very sensitive nature and wildlife in the area. Around 50.000 liter have been cleaned up and the rest has sunk in the sea and no one knows where it is or when and where it will show up. This used to be one of our favorite places to visit with our RV. It is hard to take in that this beautiful coast is contaminated with heavy fuel oil. Thick, black and sticky lumps of oil, extremely difficult to remove are found along the coast. Sea birds are smeared and many must be killed. This as a catastrophe that will be with us for many years. The process is normally very slow, but sometimes dramatic leaps are taken causing staggering changes thar are hard to take in. One example of the still ongoing slow change is the rise of land after the latest ice period that in some parts of Scandinavia is a couple of centimetres a year. Renewal is a positive health sign, as stagnation actually is a regression. and damaged coast at Han\u00f6 Bay. According to statistics, it was the worst storm since 1904. Before the storm, winds from west had pressed a lot of water into the Baltic Sea. When the wind suddenly turned to east and the storm Babet approached, it pushed the water towards the coasts of Scania, Denmark and Germany causing water levels to rise dramatically (1.5-2 m above the normal levels). The coasts in Scania were exposed to devastating eroding forces. Several meters of the overgrown beaches in Friseboda Nature Reserve were taken by the waves and enormous amount of sand moved into the sea. Washed ashore garbage, piles of roots, fallen trees and damaged boats are left on the beaches. Some of the boats that always have been laying on the beaches are gone and some \u201cnew\u201d are found. More open, austere and barren than before. Old arrangements created for visitor\u2019s convenience must be rebuilt. Benches and tables are washed away. Walking paths close to the beach are gone. Vegetation that gave protection against the wind and created \u201crooms\u201d in the landscape are gone. It is a great loss and it will take time to get used to the new environment. The water and waves undermined the trees that helpless fell over the walking path. Again, direction is from east. The waves are big and rolls loudly and powerful up on the beach. A lot of the garbage is brought back into the sea and hopefully some of the lost sand will be returned. We are used to the ever-changing conditions on the beach when the wind and the waves move the sand around. A broken GPS navigator is claimed to be the cause. Unbelievable that commercial shipping is allowed to operate with only one navigation system. A week after the accident, the ship is still aground. The damages are extensive after in total three groundings. The ship is carrying 300.000 liter of heavy fuel oil. Estimations indicates that half of it leaked into the sea and some have already hit the coast of Blekinge. A catastrophe for the very sensitive nature and wildlife in the area. Around 50.000 liter have been cleaned up and the rest has sunk in the sea and no one knows where it is or when and where it will show up. This used to be one of our favorite places to visit with our RV. It is hard to take in that this beautiful coast is contaminated with heavy fuel oil. Thick, black and sticky lumps of oil, extremely difficult to remove are found along the coast. Sea birds are smeared and many must be killed. This as a catastrophe that will be with us for many years. The process is normally very slow, but sometimes dramatic leaps are taken causing staggering changes thar are hard to take in. One example of the still ongoing slow change is the rise of land after the latest ice period that in some parts of Scandinavia is a couple of centimetres a year. Renewal is a positive health sign, as stagnation actually is a regression. Enligt statistiken, den v\u00e4rsta stormen sedan 1904. Innan stormen hade v\u00e4stliga vindar pressat in mycket vatten i \u00d6stersj\u00f6n. N\u00e4r vinden hastigt v\u00e4nde till ost och stormen Babet n\u00e4rmade sig trycktes vattnet mot Sk\u00e5nes, Danmarks och Tysklands kuster vilket gjorde att vattenniv\u00e5erna steg dramatiskt (1,5 \u2013 2 m \u00f6ver det normala). Sk\u00e5nes kuster utsattes f\u00f6r f\u00f6r\u00f6dande eroderande krafter. M\u00e5nga meter av den bev\u00e4xta delen av stranden i Friseboda naturreservat \u00e5ts upp av de aggressiva v\u00e5gorna och enorma m\u00e4ngder sand f\u00f6rdes ut i havet. Kvar finns ilandspolat br\u00e5te, h\u00f6gar av r\u00f6tter, fallna tr\u00e4d, s\u00f6nderbrutna b\u00e5tar osv. N\u00e5gra av b\u00e5tarna som alltid legat p\u00e5 stranden \u00e4r borta och nya b\u00e5tar \u00e5terfinns h\u00e4r och d\u00e4r. B\u00e4nkar och bord har spolats bort. Strandn\u00e4ra stigar \u00e4r borta. V\u00e4xtligheten som skyddade mot vinden och skapade rum i landskapet \u00e4r borta. Saknaden efter hur vi mins omr\u00e5det \u00e4r stor och det kommer ta tid f\u00f6r oss att v\u00e4nja oss vid denna nya milj\u00f6. V\u00e5gorna \u00e4r stora och rullar h\u00f6gljutt och kraftfullt in \u00f6ver stranden. De tar med sig mycket av br\u00e5ten ut i Han\u00f6bukten och f\u00f6rhoppningsvis \u00e5terf\u00f6rs en del av sanden som f\u00f6rsvunnit s\u00e5 att stranden sakta byggs upp igen. Vi \u00e4r vana vid strandens f\u00f6r\u00e4nderlighet genom att vinden och v\u00e5gorna st\u00e4ndigt f\u00f6rflyttar sanden. Trasig GPS-navigationsutrustning anges som orsak. M\u00e4rkligt att kommersiell sj\u00f6fart endast f\u00f6rlitar sig p\u00e5 ett navigationssystem. En vecka efter grundst\u00f6tningen st\u00e5r fartyget fortfarande kvar p\u00e5 grund. Skadorna \u00e4r omfattande efter totalt tre grundst\u00f6tningar. Fartygets tankar uppges ha inneh\u00e5llet 300.000 liter olja. Uppskattningsvis har 150.000 liter olja l\u00e4ckt ut, varav endast 50.000 liter tagits omhand vid den omfattande och resurskr\u00e4vande saneringen. Det kalla vattnet g\u00f6r att den resterande oljan sjunkit ner i havet och den har inte lokaliserats trots intensiva spaningar fr\u00e5n flyg och b\u00e5tar. According to statistics, it was the worst storm since 1904. Before the storm, winds from west had pressed a lot of water into the Baltic Sea. When the wind suddenly turned to east and the storm Babet approached, it pushed the water towards the coasts of Scania, Denmark and Germany causing water levels to rise dramatically (1.5-2 m above the normal levels). The coasts in Scania were exposed to devastating eroding forces. Several meters of the overgrown beaches in Friseboda Nature Reserve were taken by the waves and enormous amount of sand moved into the sea. Washed ashore garbage, piles of roots, fallen trees and damaged boats are left on the beaches. Some of the boats that always have been laying on the beaches are gone and some \u201cnew\u201d are found. More open, austere and barren than before. Old arrangements created for visitor\u2019s convenience must be rebuilt. Benches and tables are washed away. Walking paths close to the beach are gone. Vegetation that gave protection against the wind and created \u201crooms\u201d in the landscape are gone. It is a great loss and it will take time to get used to the new environment. The water and waves undermined the trees that helpless fell over the walking path. Again, direction is from east. The waves are big and rolls loudly and powerful up on the beach. A lot of the garbage is brought back into the sea and hopefully some of the lost sand will be returned. We are used to the ever-changing conditions on the beach when the wind and the waves move the sand around. A broken GPS navigator is claimed to be the cause. Unbelievable that commercial shipping is allowed to operate with only one navigation system. A week after the accident, the ship is still aground. The damages are extensive after in total three groundings. The ship is carrying 300.000 liter of heavy fuel oil. Estimations indicates that half of it leaked into the sea and some have already hit the coast of Blekinge. A catastrophe for the very sensitive nature and wildlife in the area. Around 50.000 liter have been cleaned up and the rest has sunk in the sea and no one knows where it is or when and where it will show up. This used to be one of our favorite places to visit with our RV. It is hard to take in that this beautiful coast is contaminated with heavy fuel oil. Thick, black and sticky lumps of oil, extremely difficult to remove are found along the coast. Sea birds are smeared and many must be killed. This as a catastrophe that will be with us for many years.
