Older photographs are often not in color. Depending on the chemical process used, the images built up by shades of gray that could be colored. They are often called black and white images, but more correctly they are monochrome images. Even with modern digital technology, monochrome images can be created. When the color is removed and only monochrome tones build up the image, you get a new media with new forms of expression.
